How to Use Voice Typing in Any Language on China Mobile with the Google Speech App and Gboard
Voice typing lets you write messages, emails, and notes simply by speaking — no typing required. This guide explains two professional methods to enable voice typing in any language on a phone connected to China Mobile: (1) using Gboard alone and (2) using the Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google app combined with another voice typing–supported app. It also covers microphone permissions, default app setup, and troubleshooting tips.
Before You Start — Required Setup & Permissions
- Ensure you have a stable China Mobile data or Wi-Fi connection.
- Install or update Gboard and Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google (also known as Speech Services by Google).
- Grant Microphone Permission: Go to Settings → Apps → Gboard / Google Speech → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
- Allow Additional Permissions: If prompted, allow Storage or Network access for proper recognition.
- No default voice input app? Open the Google Speech app manually and allow all required permissions first. Then set “Speech Services by Google” as your default voice input in Settings → System → Languages & input → Default voice input.
Method 1: Voice Typing Using Only Gboard (Google Keyboard)
Gboard comes with a built-in voice typing feature that works in any text field — messages, browsers, or note apps.
- Install Gboard: Download or update Gboard from the Google Play Store.
- Set as default keyboard: Go to Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard → Manage keyboards → enable and select Gboard as default.
- Grant microphone permission: Navigate to Settings → Apps → Gboard → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
- Enable voice typing: Open Gboard settings → Voice typing → Use voice typing → ON.
- Start voice typing: Open any text box → tap the microphone icon on the keyboard → speak clearly. Gboard will convert your speech into text instantly.
💡 Tip: If the microphone icon isn’t visible, long-press the comma or emoji key to access it. For multiple languages, go to Gboard → Languages → Add Keyboard and choose your desired languages.
Method 2: Google Speech Recognition + Other Voice Typing–Supported Apps
You can also use the Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google app to power voice input in apps like Google Docs, Speechnotes, or other dictation tools. This method is useful when your phone doesn’t show a built-in “Voice typing” option or you need higher accuracy for long dictations.
- Install / update the Speech app: Get Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google from the Play Store.
- Open the app and give permissions: Launch it once to grant microphone and network access. This is essential for it to function.
- Set as default voice input: Go to Settings → Languages & input → Advanced → Default voice input → select Speech Services by Google.
- Open a compatible app: Examples — Google Docs, Voice Notes, Speechnotes, or any app with a mic icon.
- Start speaking: Tap the microphone icon → speak clearly → the Google Speech app will process your voice and display text instantly.
⚙️ Important: If your device doesn’t list a default voice input app, manually open the Google Speech app, grant all permissions, and then return to settings to select it as default. Without microphone access, voice typing will not work.
Troubleshooting & Microphone Permissions
- Microphone not working? Go to Settings → Apps → Gboard / Google Speech → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
- No “Voice typing” option? Open the Google Speech app → grant all permissions → set it as the default input again.
- Slow or inaccurate recognition? Check your internet connection, reduce background noise, and ensure the correct language or dialect is selected.
- Service not available? Some devices or regions may restrict Google services — check device policy or try VPN access if allowed.
Privacy, Permissions, and Language Settings
Google’s speech recognition may temporarily send audio to its servers for processing. You can manage or delete stored audio data under Settings → Google → Account → Data & privacy → Voice & Audio Activity. To enhance accuracy, download language packs or add multiple languages to Gboard.
✅ Quick Recap: 1️⃣ Allow microphone permissions → 2️⃣ Open Google Speech app once → 3️⃣ Set it as default → 4️⃣ Use the microphone icon in your keyboard or app → 5️⃣ Speak and watch your words appear.
